Always check the current CFA, Fire Permits Victoria and Mornington Peninsula Shire information before lighting a fire. Open-air burning is not permitted during the declared Fire Danger Period without a permit, and additional local rules apply.
Before burning off
- Check current fire restrictions, local laws and the weather.
- Confirm whether a permit is required for your property and activity.
- Notify neighbours at least two hours before starting.
- Register the burn with fire services before you light it.
- Clear an adequate fire break around the burn area.
- Have enough people, water and equipment to control and extinguish it.
- Remain in attendance until the fire is completely extinguished.

Registration helps prevent unnecessary brigade call-outs. Be ready to provide the location, date, start and finish times, estimated size and what you intend to burn.
Permits and local laws
Some activities require a permit, including burn-offs during the Fire Danger Period. Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Community Amenity Local Law also regulates open-air burning outside the declared period, including rules based on property size, location, timing and conditions.
A registration is not a permit. If a permit is required, it must be granted before the activity and all permit conditions must be followed.
